Rivercyclon® 381 Grain Cover Fabric Now Available in Australia
Australia’s grain industry places significant demands on the materials used to protect grain during storage and handling.
A grain cover needs to withstand prolonged outdoor exposure, repeated installation and removal, folding, tensioning and movement, while continuing to provide reliable protection throughout its working life.
For the 2026 Australian grain season, Rivertex Technical Fabrics has committed approximately 650,000 m² of Rivercyclon® 381 to the Australian market.
A substantial proportion of this volume has already been committed to customers, with approximately 180,000 m² currently remaining available for reservation.
That represents a significant commitment by Rivertex to the Australian agricultural sector, but availability is only part of the story.
Rivercyclon® 381 has been developed specifically for demanding agricultural cover applications, with particular attention paid to the areas that can determine the real-world service life of a fabricated grain cover.
Why Flex Cracking Matters in a Grain Cover
When assessing a coated fabric, it is easy to focus primarily on tensile and tear strength. These are important properties, but they do not tell the whole story.
A grain cover is not installed once and left completely stationary for its entire working life. It can be rolled and unrolled, folded for transport or storage, moved into position, tensioned during installation and subjected to continual movement from wind and changing environmental conditions.
Every one of these actions repeatedly flexes the coated textile.
Over time, repeated flexing can cause cracking within a coating. Once this occurs, the protective properties of the material can begin to deteriorate even though the underlying reinforcement may remain structurally intact.
For this reason, flex-cracking resistance has been a major focus in the development and testing of Rivercyclon® 381.
Rivercyclon® 381 has been tested multiple times to AS 4878.9, successfully completing 400,000 flex cycles on multiple tests. Further testing has seen the material pass 500,000 cycles, demonstrating a high level of resistance to repeated flexing of the coated structure.
For a reusable agricultural cover, this is an important performance characteristic. It is not simply about how strong the fabric is when new, but how well the coated structure withstands the repeated movement experienced during fabrication, installation, use, recovery and storage.
Developed for Australian UV Exposure
Flexibility and mechanical strength are only part of the challenge.
Agricultural covers can spend extended periods exposed to direct sunlight, making UV performance another critical consideration when selecting a material.
Rivercyclon® 381 is supplied in Australia with a 3-year UV warranty.
For Australian fabricators and end users, this provides additional confidence when specifying Rivercyclon® 381 for outdoor agricultural cover applications and reflects the importance Rivertex places on UV performance when developing materials for this market.
Rather than treating UV resistance as an additional feature, we consider it a fundamental requirement of a reusable agricultural cover material.
A Reinforced Polypropylene Coated Textile
Rivercyclon® 381 is a 380-gsm reinforced polypropylene coated textile.
Polypropylene provides fabricators with a different material platform to the traditional PVC-coated polyester fabrics widely used throughout industrial and agricultural markets.
The objective is not to suggest that polypropylene replaces PVC in every application. Rivertex manufactures and supplies both material technologies, and the correct choice should always be determined by the requirements of the finished product.
Rivercyclon® has instead been developed to give fabricators another option where the characteristics of a polypropylene coated textile make sense for the application.
Rivercyclon® 381 is heat weldable, allowing it to be fabricated using established coated-textile manufacturing processes.
Recyclability and Material Composition
Like the wider Rivercyclon® range, Rivercyclon® 381 is:

- Heat weldable
Material selection is increasingly about more than simply whether a fabric can perform the immediate task. How the material is manufactured, what it contains and what happens to it at the end of its working life are becoming increasingly relevant considerations.
Strength Still Matters
While flex cracking and UV resistance are particularly important for reusable grain covers, the fundamental mechanical performance of the material remains critical.
Large, fabricated covers can experience considerable loads during installation and service. Tensile strength, tear resistance and the construction of the reinforcement all contribute to how the finished cover performs.
This is why Rivertex looks at Rivercyclon® 381 as a complete coated textile rather than focusing on one individual test result.
Mechanical strength, coating performance, flex resistance, UV performance, weldability and material weight all need to work together.
This becomes particularly important when covers are expected to be deployed, recovered and reused across multiple seasons rather than treated as single-use products.
From Ground Cover to Grain Cover
The Australian Rivercyclon® agricultural range extends beyond an individual grain cover fabric.
Rivercyclon® 220 provides a complementary lightweight polypropylene material suitable for use as a ground cover within grain protection systems.
This allows fabricators to consider polypropylene across both major components of the system.
Rivercyclon® 381 provides the heavier-duty material for the primary grain cover, while Rivercyclon® 220 provides a lightweight option for the ground cover beneath the grain.
Both products are heat weldable and recyclable and form part of the wider Rivercyclon® polypropylene coated textile platform.
For fabricators, this provides the opportunity to manufacture a more complete grain protection system using materials from the same Rivercyclon® family.
Australian Availability for the 2026 Grain Season
Material performance is important, but when the grain season arrives, availability becomes equally important.
Fabricators need confidence that material will be available when production requirements increase, particularly in a market where demand is highly seasonal.
Rivertex has therefore made a significant commitment to the Australian market for 2026.
Approximately 650,000 m² of Rivercyclon® 381 has been committed to Australia for the season.
Customer requirements have already accounted for a substantial proportion of this volume, with approximately 180,000 m² currently remaining available for reservation.
This seasonal stock programme is designed to give Australian fabricators greater confidence around supply and reduce reliance on international production and shipping lead times once seasonal demand is underway.

A Growing Rivercyclon® Platform in Australia
Rivercyclon® 381 forms part of a much broader development programme for Rivercyclon® in Australia.
The range now includes polypropylene coated textiles for lightweight covers, fumigation, agriculture, industrial fabrication and transport applications.
The objective is to give fabricators more material choices.
PVC will continue to be the right solution for many applications. In others, polypropylene can provide a compelling combination of performance, weight, weldability, recyclability and material composition.
